Overview

Organisational communication comprises the messages sent and received between formal and informal groups within an organisation or between different organisations.  Good communication helps an organisation to build stable, open and trusting relationships among formal and informal groups within the organisation, as well as with external groups and the public. These relationships can help the organisation survive even the most critical circumstances.

 

This learner resource has been designed to assist an individual to gain the skills and knowledge required to manage communication strategies and initiatives within an organisation.

Course
content

This learner resource is divided into five sections.

·         Section 1 introduces the concept of organisational communication and explains the need for a systematic and planned approach to communication

·         Section 2 outlines the process for developing strategies which meet both the internal and external communication needs of an organisation

·         Section 3 explores the issues involved in implementing a communication strategy; possible barriers which may have to be overcome and how to develop project plans and budgets

·         Section 4 provides guidelines on reviewing the effectiveness of a communication strategy

·         Section 5 includes guidelines for developing an organisational communication strategy so that the learner has an opportunity to integrate all the content covered in the previous sections and to apply it to a specific communication requirement.

Learning objectives

On completion of PUACOM004B, participants will be able to:

·         explain the concepts of organisational communication

·         explain the rationale for a strategic approach to organisational communication

·         outline the components of a communication strategy

·         identify and address the special needs of a target audience

·         develop key communication messages

·         identify appropriate pathways for communicating messages to target groups

·         develop a communication project plan, listing key phases, activities and tasks, and timings

·         outline some models of evaluation

·         explain the rationale and list questions to be addressed when conducting a communication audit

·         develop an entire communication strategy using guidelines provided.
