Overview |
A driver of an emergency vehicle must always have regard for personal safety, the safety of passengers and other road users. Vehicles must always be driven carefully and in a safe and controlled way.
This learner resource provides an overview of the skills and knowledge required to drive such a vehicle without injury to passengers or other road users in emergency and non-emergency response conditions and off-road. |

Course content |
The content focuses on defensive driving techniques and how to apply these skills in a variety of traffic, road and terrain conditions. The content also addresses the procedures for conducting recovery of a vehicle using jacking equipment and winching systems. |

Learning objectives |
On completion of PUAVEH001A, participants will be able to:
explain each of the seven vehicle support systems and how each contributes to the smooth operation of the vehicle
explain and demonstrate the following vehicle checks that must be conducted before driving a vehicle:
- cabin raising and lowering, pre-use check, cabin and pre-drive drill
- test run, parking and securing a vehicle
explain the legislative and organisational requirements related to driving a vehicle under non-operational and under operational conditions
demonstrate under both operational and non-operational conditions:
- defensive driving techniques and operation of a vehicle in accordance with organisational procedures
- the procedures for stopping, siting and securing a vehicle
explain the traffic, road and terrain conditions that need to be considered when driving a vehicle
drive a vehicle off-road and undertake the following activities:
- explain the characteristics of a four-wheel drive
- demonstrate vehicle manoeuvring skills
- demonstrate engagement of a four-wheel drive and describe the conditions in which to engage the vehicle
- demonstrate stall recovery skills
- demonstrate vehicle control in a variety of off-road conditions
demonstrate and explain the procedures for recovering a vehicle after an accident including:
- explain the principles of recovery
- demonstrate the use of jacking equipment supplied with the vehicle
- demonstrate winching systems and their operation
- demonstrate setting up and rigging for a given range of situations. |
