This learner resource provides you with an overview of the
roles and responsibilities of each fire agency in a hazardous materials
incident and the procedures that should be followed when responding to an
incident and rendering it safe. The information and activities in this
learner resource will assist an individual to gain the skills and knowledge
to safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials.

Course
content
|
This learner resource is divided into five sections.
·
Section 1 introduces common terminology used
to describe incidents involving hazardous materials and outlines the roles
and responsibilities of firefighting agencies in each state and territory and
in New Zealand.
·
Section 2 describes the various methods for
identifying dangerous goods and hazardous substances.
·
Section 3 outlines the procedures for
responding to a hazardous materials incident.
·
Section 4 provides information on the
establishment of control zones, containment, resources and support networks,
decontamination and rendering the incident safe.
·
Section 5 explores a number of special hazards
that may be encountered when responding to a hazardous materials incident and
safe work practices.

explain and demonstrate the identification and
classification procedures for hazardous materials

describe and demonstrate procedures for
decontamination and documentation of equipment, clothing and personnel
·
describe the characteristics, identification
details and safe handling procedures of ‘special risk’ hazardous materials.
