Course
content

This learner resource is divided into five sections.

·         Section 1 identifies the type of fire detection and alarm systems commonly found in buildings, their location, how they are triggered and their advantages and disadvantages.

·         Section 2 describes the different types of sprinkler and suppressions systems; how these systems use water supplies and the components of a wet pipe system.

·         Section 3 outlines how extinguishing media such as foam, powder and gaseous agents are used to protect special hazards present in some buildings.

·         Section 4 explains how air handling systems, fire and smoke doors and alarm signalling equipment are used to control the movement of smoke within a building.

·         Section 5 explains the procedures involved in the monitoring, checking and testing of the status of alarms and sprinkler systems.
