Course content |
This learner resource is divided into five sections.
Section 1 introduces common terminology used to describe incidents involving hazardous materials and outlines the roles and responsibilities of firefighting agencies in each state and territory and in New Zealand.
Section 2 describes the various methods for identifying dangerous goods and hazardous substances.
Section 3 outlines the procedures for responding to a hazardous materials incident.
Section 4 provides information on the establishment of control zones, containment, resources and support networks, decontamination and rendering the incident safe.
Section 5 explores a number of special hazards that may be encountered when responding to a hazardous materials incident and safe work practices. |

Learning objectives |
On completion of PUAFIR306A, participants will be able to:
safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials
describe agency roles and responsibilities under state or territory emergency planning and response legislation
explain and demonstrate the identification and classification procedures for hazardous materials
identify and demonstrate the various methods that may be used to contain and recover spilt hazardous substances to combat an incident
describe and demonstrate procedures for decontamination and documentation of equipment, clothing and personnel
describe the characteristics, identification details and safe handling procedures of ‘special risk’ hazardous materials. |
